Richard Jolley At The Knoxville Museum Of Art, And CurrentsThursday, January 15, 2015
The Knoxville Museum of Art -- rightly (and intelligently) -- has an emphasis on not just one or two galleries of regional art, but rather it seems the vast majority of the building is devoted to its place.
Between the regional student art exhibit, the Higher Ground exhibit of East Tennessee Art, the Currents exhibit of more contemporary art with some southern pieces, and the Richard Jolley installation (he grew up in nearby Oak Ridge), KMA is filling this niche beautifully.
Cycle of Life, the Richard Jolley exhibit:
Select pieces from the Currents exhibit:
Charlotta Westergren's 'Siting' mosaic, 2003:
A close-up, to show detail. Made of sequins with pins, rubber stoppers, foam core to allow for depth:
A bit more staid than her more recent mosaic from 2012.
Gordon Cheung's 'Fallen' 2009:
Amy Pleasant's 'When Ruby Met Jim' pt 1 and 2. 2004:
Devorah Sperber's 'After Mona Lisa 8' 2010:
Made of 1482 spools of thread:
Microsoft has this work by Devorah Sperber at its campus in Redmond.
Evan Penny's 'Back of Evan 3' 2006:
Giles Lyon's 'Empire' 1997-2009:
Really looking forward to the museum's Contemporary Focus 2015 exhibit, opening January 30.
