Port Gibson MS - Bernheimer House, The Hand, and Quilts!Sunday, April 08, 2007
We left the Trace for a couple of hours to visit Port Gibson - this is a pic of the Bernheimer House B&B run by Loren and Nancy Ouart.
We've stayed there before, and since then, Loren has finished uncovering the amazing mosaics on the outside of the house...I don't think I've ever seen a house with mosaics like this before!
We always stop to take pics of the hand atop the steeple at First Presbyterian:
I tried zooming in and making the background transparent in Photoshop (not perfect, but...) - here's the hand in more detail. Loren has a telescope in the top floor of his house that shows little pins all over the hand that keep birds from nesting on it. I wrote more about the church and the symbolism of the hand in this post.
This is the new mural at the Mississippi Cultural Crossroads building - there are lots of quilts inside for sale:
The last time we were in town, we shopped at the MCC quilt shop, but the new quilt shop in town wasn't open.
This is Back Forty Quilting (627 Market St, 601/437.0777) - the last time we were here, this building was completely gutted - but look how pretty it is now:
Oh! And we bought a quilt - it's not a bed-size quilt, it's a...um...cuddle-size quilt! We got it to go in the nursery for when we snuggle up with the baby in the rocking chair:
It's decorated with the sweetest farm scenes. This is a close up of the pinwheel that has the lambs on it - there are others with ponies, piggies, cows, and many others:
I also brought home a gourd from their shop - it's a birdhouse gourd painted with a pretty hydrangea:
I can't wait to see what bird uses it this year! We have another gourd birdhouse and last year a Carolina Wren made her home in it. So sweet!
