University of the South, Sewanee TN

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

The last time we went to University of the South, it was for a big family reunion - the part of my family that isn't Jewish is the family of the leading founder of the school, Bishop Leonidas Polk - so that's where the reunion was held. There's an entry about Leonidas on Wikipedia here.

Since we were driving up to Tennessee this weekend, Av and I decided to see the campus again just because it is so incredibly pretty.

There are *so* many pretty stained glass windows:

This one depicts Leonidas signing his letter to other bishops in the South, telling them that it was time to build an Episcopal university:

The thing that made me laugh was that when I posted this pic on Flickr, one of my friends commented about his sideburns and said it looked like Elvis in stained glass!

There are something like 24 stained glass windows like this in the sanctuary.
This one is of William Crawford Gorgas, who was Surgeon General of the US Army:

The other windows depict: Sir Charles Lyell, Cervantes, John Wycliffe, J.S. Bach, St. Swithin, Michelangelo, Duke of Wellington, Richard Hooker, Blaise Pascal, Adam Smith, Gifford Pinchot, James Harrington, William Shakespeare, St. Cecilia, St. Ambrose, Sir Isaac Newton, Carolus Linnaeus, The Venerable Bede, Bishop Henry Disbrow Phillips, Bishop George Berkeley, Louis Agassiz, St. Clement of Alexandria, and Robert Boyle. There's a set of all the windows in the chapel on my Sewanee Flickr set here.

One of Av's best friends from high school, Melissa, graduated from Sewanee - she is a *wonderful* artist who does illustrations for science fiction and fantasy titles, and while that sort of artwork isn't my thing, I am **sincerely in love** with all of her artwork for children based around letters of the alphabet. That section of her website is here.

We bought the illustration she did for the letter "G" a couple of years ago- it's a G for Gingerbread Man and will be going in the nursery. This is a screenshot of one of her illustrations for children - "C for The Cat and the Fiddle":

Okay - now I need to email her and get some others!
