Irondale Cafe, Irondale ALWednesday, March 08, 2006
This week, Av and I drove over to Irondale and had lunch at the Irondale Cafe, the restaurant that inspired Fannie Flag to write 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe' (Fannie's great-aunt used to own it). It's been *forever* since I've seen that movie, but I remember Idgie and Ruth (and that barbecue they and Big George made), and how the end made me just cry and cry.
Anyway, back to lunch! I had chicken livers, dressing, and (tada!) fried green tomatoes. Av likes their fried chicken. Everything was really good.
Here's a pic of their famous fried green tomatoes:
The cafe sells their fried green tomato batter mix (I like cornmeal-based mix, but theirs is more flour-based), as well as at grocery stores...you can get it over the internet at their site, too. I've never bought it, but it's super-simple to make...the next time I fix fried green tomatoes, I'll post pics and my recipe.
