Oka Kapassa - Return to Coldwater Festival, Tuscumbia AL

Av and I had to be in Florence this weekend, and we were lucky enough to be there while the Oka Kapassa Festival was going on. The festival celebrates the traditions and culture of American Indians while being a remembrance of when they were forcibly removed from this region. There were demonstrations of stickball (if you ever stay in the hotel at one of the casinos in Philadelphia, MS, their local television station covers stickball games), storytelling, crafts, food, displays, and *lots* of dancing. The movie file at the middle of this post (which I recorded on my camera, how neat!) is just a few seconds of one of their dances. The rhythmic sound you'll hear is produced by these things that the women wear on their legs for the dances.

BTW, I use Firefox browser and had a hard time getting the movie file to play, but it plays perfectly on Internet Explorer. Hmmmm.....
